Not illustrated. 1737 edition. Excerpt: ... vens, or the fame six'd Stars; and its continual Parallelism to itself; all the apparent Revolution of the Sun must depend on the annual Motion; and A Day and a Tear be all one. This is evident, because, as a Tear is truly that Space in which the Sun seemingly, and the Earth really performs a single Revolution round the Ediptick; so a Day is truly that Space in which the Sun passes, or appears to pass from any certain Semi-Meridian to the fame again once: which Spaces of Time are here the very fame, and so the Apellations themselves Tear and Day, may indifferently and promiscuously be apply'd thereto. (2.) The Course of the Sun and Planets, (for the fix'd Stars were then Fix'd indeed; having neither a real nor seeming Motion) must be contrary to what it has appear'd since: their Rising being then in the Weft, and their Setting in the East; which, from the way of their present diurnal Rotation, has since, as all know, been quite different. (3.) There must be a perpetual Equinox, or Equality of Day and Night, through the whole Planet; by reason of the Sun's describing each Revolution a great Circle about the same, on which alone such an Equality depends. (4.) The Ecliptick must supply the Place of an Equator also; and the torrid, temperate, and frigid Zones be almost alike dispos'd with regard to that Circle, as with us they are with regard to the real Equator. (5.) To such as liv'd under or near the said Ecliptick, the Poles of the World or Ecliptick, the only ones then in Being, would be at or near the Horizon; and so not considerably elevated or depress'd to the Inhabitants there. But upon the commencing of a quicker diurnal Rotation, the same way with the annual, the Case would be in all these Particulars quite different. For, (i.) By...

Nothing has frightened or fascinated us more than the experience that we call 'death'. Now, in what very well could be the most profound of all his CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD books, bestselling Mobius author Neale Donald Walsch asks the questions that we have all wanted to ask, and receives answers we have all been waiting for, in this deeply moving and highly personal dialogue with Deity. HOME WITH GOD is the definitive spiritual work on death and dying, offering new insights, deep wisdom and peace of mind, for the terminally ill, family members of the dying, hospital and medical professionals, members of the clergy, and everyone encountering death. HOME WITH GOD logically completes Neale Donald Walsch's dialogue with God, exploring the process by which we end our lives here on earth and begin our so-called After Life experience. A book of comfort, hope and surprising revelation, HOME WITH GOD is an astonishing, deeply healing, and reassuring spiritual classic.

"Dishonesty inspires more euphemisms than copulation or defecation. This helps desensitize us to its implications. In the post-truth era we don't just have truth and lies but a third category of ambiguous statements that are not exactly the truth but fall just short of a lie. Enhanced truth it might be called. Neo-truth. Soft truth. Faux truth. Truth lite." Deception has become the modern way of life. Where once the boundary line between truth and lies was clear and distinct, it is no longer so. In the post-truth era, deceiving others has become a challenge, a game, a habit. High-profile dissemblers compete for news coverage, from journalists like Jayson Blair and professors like Joseph Ellis to politicians (of all stripes), executives, and "creative" accountants. Research suggests that the average American tells multiple lies on a daily basis, often for no good reason. Not a finger-wagging scolding, The Post-Truth Era is a combination of Ralph Keyes's investigative journalism and solid science. The result is a spirited exploration of why we lie about practically everything and the consequences such casual dishonesty has on society. American society has become permeated from top to bottom by deception. Its consequences for the nature of public discourse, media, business, literature, academia, and politics are profound. With dry humor, passionate fervor, and deep understanding, Ralph Keyes takes us on a tour of a world where truth and honesty are no longer absolutes but mutable, fluid concepts.

This collection touches on a wide range of anthropological issues, including family and marriage, myths, and rites, the environment and its representation, and constraint and freedom. The essays encompass more than forty years of analysis and constrain arguments that are as relevant today as they were thirty years ago. "Hardly a field remains untouched—sociobiology, linguistics, botany, genetics, psychiatry, esthetics, ecology, politics, neuroscience, education, morality, psychology. . . . It's all breathtaking and alarming, some of it wonderful, some of it ridiculous. . . . At times the experience is exhilarating."—Richard A. Shweder, New York Times Book Review

"This is surely a new paradigm for the study of history that will be regarded as revolutionary but which is also well justified. To my knowledge, no other book integrates the study of human history with principles of biological and cultural evolution on such an ambitious scale."--David Sloan Wilson, author of Darwin's Cathedral: Evolution, Religion and the Nature of Society "This is one of the most exciting books I've read in years. It is so accessible, so groundbreaking, so stimulating, so important that I imagine the next generation of historians will be deeply influenced by what Smail has to say here. Simply dazzling."--Lynn Hunt, author of Inventing Human Rights

Myth and mysticism have reigned supreme in Rgvedic interpretation for more than two millennia and a half. Even now, it cannot be said to be free of these. This study aims at completing the process of rational inquiry in Rgveda begun two centuries ago. It leaves behind myths and mystic experiences, simultaneously drawing the line between fact and fancy, which has eluded the scholars. Two types of evidence - literary and archaeological - have been used. Literary evidence ranges from Rgveda to the Brahmanas. The Archaeological material covers pre-Harappan , Harappan and post-Harappan levels. Through the interdisciplinary approach consisting of linguistic, anthropological and symbolical analysis of the material, the study emphasizes a consistently rational attitude to the study of Rgveda. In fact, as the study amply demonstrates, the fresh air of reason may change our understanding of Rgveda and also of ancient Indian history. Rgvedic hymns from this viewpoint may probably prove to be a valuable source of information of the historical events, which led to the downfall of the pre-Aryan Indus civilization. This is correlated to the archaeological material available on the Harappan sites. This is the first investigation of its kind and the conclusions of the study are no less original. Besides establishing the rationality of the Rgvedic narratives, it shows the events and their agents to be historical in the light of available archaeological material. The theory and the approach hold out a promise and may transform our understanding of these ancient compositions from myth to history.
